Your Display needs about an hour and a half before its first cook, with almost all of it charging. Do these in order.

1. Charge it

Plug the Display into a standard 5V USB port over USB-C. A full charge takes about 90 minutes, and the low battery indicator flashes until it is done.

Use a standard 5V port only. Avoid high-voltage "fast charge" bricks.

2. Update the firmware

1. Download the Combustion Inc app for iOS or Android
2. Go to Settings, then tap Update
3. Give the Display about 10 minutes on the charger afterwards

Update one device at a time. Leave any other Combustion tools powered off or in standby while each one updates.

3. Link your thermometer

4. Press start/stop to turn the Display on
5. Take your thermometer out of its charger to wake it
6. Hold the two next to each other for a few seconds

When a temperature appears on screen, they are linked. Each Display holds up to 4 thermometers, so repeat for each one.

4. Connect it to WiFi (If you have a WiFi Display)

This is what turns the Display into a bridge to the cloud, so you can watch a cook from anywhere with internet. WiFi setup happens in the app, under WiFi Devices, not on the Display itself.

Four things decide whether it joins:

• Use the 2.4 GHz band. The Display is 802.11 b/g/n and joins 2.4 GHz networks only. If your router broadcasts 2.4 and 5 GHz under one name, or is 5 GHz only, point the Display at the 2.4 GHz network specifically.
• Network type. Open, WPA, WPA2, and WPA3 Personal all work. Networks with a sign-in page, like hotel, campus, or guest WiFi, are not supported.
• Plain network names. An SSID with emoji or accented characters can stop the Display from joining. Choose Other in the network list to type it manually if needed.
• On a mesh system (Orbi, eero, Google Nest), the Display's low-power WiFi chip locks onto one access point when it powers on and does not hop between nodes. Set it up and power it on in the spot where it will actually live, then give it a minute.

If it joins your network but never appears in the app, check that the app is signed into the right Combustion account. WiFi Display: Troubleshooting Guide covers the rest.

5. If you have a Booster or a Giant Grill Gauge

Link everything together in one go rather than one at a time. See How to Link All Tools (Multi-Node MeatNet™).

You only need one WiFi tool in your setup. If the Display is it, you do not also need a WiFi Booster for cloud access.

Running more than one thermometer

The Display shows one thermometer at a time, and you move between them with the temp button. Each press steps through Core, then Surface, then Ambient for one thermometer, then moves on to the next.

Each thermometer is controlled independently, so you can set a different target temperature for each one. Nicknames and photos are app-only; the Display identifies them by position. See Using Multiple Thermometers.
