WiFi, Cloud, and Bluetooth: How it all worksUpdated 5 months ago

The Short Answer

Your Combustion thermometer uses WiFi for remote monitoring through our cloud service (MeatNet™ Cloud), and Bluetooth for local connections (MeatNet™). While WiFi currently requires cloud connectivity, we've designed our system to give you maximum independence and reliability.

Why Cloud?

Think of MeatNet™ Cloud as a secure bridge - it helps your device send temperature data to your phone when you're away from home. While we understand some users prefer cloud-free devices, we've built our system with some important principles:

  1. Your Device is Self-Reliant
    • Core functions run directly on the thermometer
    • Temperature tracking and predictions happen locally
    • Safety calculations are processed on-device
    • All essential features work without external dependencies
  2. You Have Options
    • Use WiFi for remote monitoring
    • Use Bluetooth for local connections
    • Bluetooth mesh network extends your range
    • Switch between connection types anytime
  3. Your Data Stays Yours
    • Open communication protocols
    • Public GitHub repository with example code
    • Third-party app integration supported
    • Community development welcomed

Bluetooth MeatNet™: The Cloud-Free Alternative

Prefer to skip the cloud? No problem, use local Bluetooth::

  • Direct device-to-phone communication
  • Full access to core features
  • Extended range through mesh networking
  • No internet required

Future-Proof Design

We understand concerns about cloud dependency. That's why we've:

  • Made core functions independent of cloud services
  • Published open-source communication protocols
  • Provided developer tools and documentation
  • Enabled third-party app integration

Community and Integration

Our open approach has already enabled:

  • Integration with apps like Crouton
  • Community-developed solutions
  • Custom connectivity options
  • Extended device capabilities

What's Next?

While local-only WiFi isn't currently available, our open architecture means:

  • Community members can develop local solutions
  • Third-party developers can create alternatives
  • Your device remains functional regardless of cloud status
  • Core features are always accessible via Bluetooth
