Setup Guide: BoosterUpdated 2 days ago
Your Booster needs about an hour before its first cook, most of which is charging. Do these in order.
1. Charge the Booster
Plug it into a standard 5V USB port via USB-C. A full charge takes about 60 minutes.
You supply the cable and the plug. A USB cable and power adapter are not included with any Combustion product. Any USB-C cable and any standard 5V USB port will do.
⚠️ Do not put the thermometer in yet. Seating a thermometer switches the Booster's radio off, and taking it out switches it back on. That is by design, but it will stop you from completing setup.
2. Update the firmware
- Download the Combustion Inc app for iOS or Android
- Unplug the Booster from USB, and leave the thermometer out
- Go to Settings > Update Devices, then tap Update
- Recharge the Booster afterwards
Update one device at a time. Leave other thermometers, Boosters and Displays powered off or in standby while each one updates. Power the Booster off by holding the button for 1 second.
3. Link your thermometer
- Unplug the Booster from USB
- Watch the light: three white flashes in a row, repeating, means it is searching
- Hold a charged thermometer near the Booster
- A single white blink means the link is made, and it repeats every 5 seconds
Booster Lights (LED) decodes every pattern.
4. Connect it to WiFi (WiFi Booster only)
This is what lets the app see your cook from anywhere with internet. WiFi setup happens in the app, under WiFi Devices, not on the Booster.
- Use the 2.4 GHz band. Combustion WiFi radios do not use 5 GHz. If your router broadcasts both bands under one name, your phone may hand the Booster a 5 GHz network it cannot join.
- Network type. Open, WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 Personal work. Networks with a sign-in page, like hotel, office or guest WiFi, are not supported.
- Keep the network name simple. Emoji, accents or special characters in the SSID can block the connection.
- On a mesh system (Orbi, eero, Google Nest), the Booster locks onto one access point at power-on and does not roam. Put it where it will live, then power it on there by holding the button for about a second, and give it a minute.
A brief blue flash confirms WiFi is connected. If it joins but never appears in the app, check the app is signed into the right Combustion account.
5. If you have a Display or a Giant Grill Gauge
Link everything in one go rather than one pair at a time. See How to Link All Tools (Multi-Node MeatNet™).
You only need one WiFi tool in your setup.
If you need to start over
| What you want | How |
| Power off or on | Hold the button for 1 second |
| Full reset, clearing all linked devices | Remove the thermometer, then hold the button for 10 seconds |
A full reset is the fix when tools have linked to the wrong things, or when a replacement Booster is confusing the app.
Still have a question?
If your Booster will not charge, will not link, or will not join your network, email [email protected] and tell us which Booster you have and where in this guide you got stuck.
