Predictive Thermometer (2nd Generation)Updated 5 days ago
The 2nd-generation Combustion Predictive Thermometer uses an evenly spaced array of 8 sensors to give you Total Temperature Awareness of everything happening inside and around your food. The processing happens onboard: it finds the coldest part of your food, tracks the surface, and tells you when the food will be ready rather than just how hot it is now.
It is the only thermometer that measures surface temperature, and the only one that tells you when your food is safe to eat before it overcooks.
What's in the box
- The 2nd-generation Predictive Thermometer, with its charging and standby case.
You will also need the Combustion app (free on iOS and Android) or a Display (sold separately).
The sensors
| Sensors | What they do |
| 4 TrueCore | Locate and track the lowest internal temperature |
| 3 TrueSurface | Monitor the true cooking temperature at the surface of your food |
| 1 TrueAmbient | Isolates the air temperature immediately around your food |
The Prediction Engine models heat dynamics and evaporative cooling to predict cook time, including on long low-and-slow cooks. Predictive Thermometer Basics explains why eight sensors changes what a thermometer can tell you.
What changed in the 2nd generation
A fully hermetic seal. High-temperature ceramic-to-metal brazing creates a permanent metallurgical bond between the ceramic handle and the steel tube, rather than a conventional seal or adhesive that can degrade over time. It is nitrogen-flushed and tested to IP69K, the highest ingress protection rating available. That clears it for vacuum sealing, sous vide, and deep frying.
A higher temperature ceiling. The high-temp region now reaches 900ºF (482ºC), up from 600ºF.
A relocated ambient sensor, which provides faster, more accurate readings.
Everything else that made the original work is unchanged. For the full side-by-side, see Predictive Thermometer: 1st vs 2nd Generation Comparison.
Is my 1st generation obsolete?
Not at all. If you have an original Predictive Thermometer that is working well for you, keep using it. We continue to support it with new app features and firmware upgrades, exactly as before, and it is still excellent for most cooking setups.
Your 1st-generation thermometer also works with the 2nd-generation WiFi accessories. Adding a WiFi Display, WiFi Booster, or Giant Grill Gauge to an existing set gets you remote monitoring without replacing your thermometer.
The 2nd generation is more durable, senses ambient temperature better, and goes hotter. For everyday cooking, the 1st generation still does the job.
Adding WiFi
Any Predictive Thermometer, either generation, can use any of our WiFi accessories: the WiFi Display, the WiFi Booster, or the Giant Grill Gauge. These connect to your existing WiFi network and send live cook data anywhere with internet access, viewable in the Combustion app.
One WiFi accessory covers your whole setup. Make sure your firmware is current to use the feature.
Why isn't WiFi in the thermometer itself?
Battery life. WiFi draws far more power than Bluetooth, and the thermometer's battery has to be small enough to sit near the probe tip.
Using Bluetooth's low-energy design is what allows over 90 hours of battery life while still updating every 5 seconds during normal cooking, and up to 5 times per second when it matters. Putting WiFi in a separate tool means the thermometer spends its power on what only it can do: collecting data, running the prediction algorithms, and SafeCook.
WiFi's transmission power is more than 10 times that of Bluetooth, which is why an accessory handles it well, and why it works from a basement where a lower-power signal would struggle.
Try it
We stand behind our products with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If the thermometer does not improve your cooking, return it for a full refund of the purchase price, shipping not included.
