Predictive Cooking with the AppUpdated a month ago
The app's core feature is telling you when your food will be ready, not just how hot it is right now. Here is how to run a predicted cook.
Before you start
Turn on Bluetooth and make sure the app has permission to use it. Take the thermometer out of its charger or Booster; it will not read food temperatures while it is sitting in one.
Running the cook
- Insert the thermometer into the food, at least as far as the minimum insertion line marked on the tube. Short of that line, the sensors cannot see the food properly and the prediction will be wrong.
- Tap Predict and set the temperature you are cooking to.
- Tap Begin Prediction, then start cooking.
- Wait. Roughly a third of the way through, the app starts showing an estimated time remaining. That estimate keeps correcting itself as the cook goes on, so it gets steadier the closer you get.
- The alarm sounds when the food reaches your target. Take it off the heat.
After the alarm
Food keeps cooking after you pull it, because heat carries on moving inward from the surface. Slicing lets it cool quickly, which for most things is what you want.
If you would rather rest it, aim lower than your real target and let the carryover finish the job. Carryover Cooking and Resting explains how much to allow for, and why it varies so much between a steak and a roast.
