Overheat Alarm: Display Flashing Red and ScreechingUpdated 8 days ago

If your Display is flashing red and screeching, one of the thermometer's sensors has gone above its safe operating temperature.

Take your food off the heat now.

Then read on, because what happens next depends on which end of the thermometer got too hot.


Temperature limits

Your thermometer has two zones with very different tolerances. The minimum insertion line is the boundary.

 Two things worth knowing about the 2nd generation:

  • 900°F (482°C) is a peak limit, not a cruising speed. For sustained cooking, keep the upper half below 750°F (399°C). Brief excursions above that are survivable. Long ones are not.
  • The ambient sensor stops reporting at about 733°F (389°C). If your ambient reading disappears or shows no data during a very hot sear, that is the sensor reaching the top of its range, not a fault and not damage.

Why this alarm exists

The red alert means a reading crossed one of the limits above. It is a warning, not a verdict. Most of the time the thermometer is fine and the alarm has done its job.

The usual cause is insertion. The thermometer needs to go in at least to the minimum insertion line, with the handle end kept away from direct heat. If it was pushed all the way through the food, or the handle was sitting near the flame, the upper sensors will climb fast.


What to do when you get a red alert

  1. Remove the food from the heat immediately.
  2. Check the readings on your Display or in the app. Look for anything at or above the limits in the table.
  3. Check the insertion. Was the thermometer in at least to the minimum line? Was any part below the line exposed rather than surrounded by food?
  4. Let the thermometer cool to room temperature for about ten minutes, then see whether the alarm clears.

If the alarm clears once it has cooled, it was almost certainly an insertion problem. Insert it correctly next time and carry on.

If the alarm keeps firing after the thermometer is fully cool, or a reading is stuck at an extreme value, stop troubleshooting and see the final section.


If the lower sensors overheated

The lower sensors sit below the insertion line, inside your food. If they went above 220°F (105°C), the electronics down there may have taken some heat.

Check the following:

  • Is the thermometer still connecting, with temperatures showing and updating?
  • Are the readings steady, or do you see erratic jumps and values that do not match what you are cooking?

If it is connecting and the readings look sensible, the thermometer should carry on working normally. If it will not connect, or the readings are clearly erratic, see the final section.


If the upper sensors overheated

This one needs a little care, because the risk is not immediately visible.

High heat at the handle end can damage the main seal inside the handle. Your thermometer will most likely keep working, but its water resistance may be reduced. That matters because a compromised seal can let fluid reach the internal electronics later, which is what eventually causes a short.

After a handle overheat, treat it as no longer waterproof:

  • Hand-wash only. No dishwasher.
  • Do not immerse or submerge it, either while cooking or while cleaning. Sous vide is out.

Seal damage is cumulative. The more overheats it takes, and the longer each one lasts, the more likely it is that water resistance has gone. There is unfortunately no way to inspect a seal without destroying the thermometer, so the safe assumption after a handle overheat is that it is no longer sealed.


Avoiding it next time

  • Insert to at least the minimum line, and deeper where the food allows.
  • Keep the handle out of direct flame, and away from the hottest part of a grill.
  • On a very hot sear, be aware the upper half is doing the work. Watch the ambient reading, and remember it stops reporting around 733°F (389°C).
  • Do not push the thermometer all the way through the food so the tip comes out the far side into open heat.
