On the 1st Generation, cooking mode runs up to 42 hr.
A thermometer out of its charger is in instant-read mode by default. It switches to cooking mode when you set a target temperature, which is when the longer runtime applies. It goes into standby when it is sitting in the charging cradle with the cradle unplugged.
A full charge takes about 25 minutes. Five minutes of charging gives you roughly 24 hours of cook time on the 2nd Generation, or about 8 hours on the 1st.
