Giant Grill Gauge (GGG): Troubleshooting GuideUpdated a month ago

Love your Giant Grill Gauge, but something's not quite right? Most GGG hiccups stem from a few common causes, and you can often fix them yourself in a couple of minutes. Work through the section that matches what you're seeing. And if it's still not happy afterward, we're one email away.

Quick checklist before you dive in:

  • Fresh batteries installed? (2× CR2450)
  • Combustion app updated to the latest version?
  • Display snapped firmly onto its mount, with clean metal contacts?

The display is blank, dim, or won't turn on

If your gauge won't power up — or the screen went dark in the middle of a cook — start here:

  1. Swap in fresh batteries. Use 2× CR2450.
  2. Do a hard reset. Press and hold the < and – buttons together for about 10 seconds — the gauge will restart. This clears most lock-ups and mid-cook freezes.
  3. Power-cycle it. If the reset doesn't help, remove both batteries, wait about 30 seconds, then reinsert them and press the power button. If the screen still shows nothing, let the unit sit with the batteries removed (or fully drained) before trying a fresh pair.
  4. Check the contacts. Make sure the display is snapped fully onto the mount, and the metal contacts on both the display and the mount are clean and dry.

A digit or segment on the display is missing, faded, or garbled

Seeing a number that's partly missing — like the first or middle digit not fully forming, or segments that fade out above a certain temperature? Try this first:

  1. Do a hard reset. Press and hold the < and – buttons together for about 10 seconds to restart the gauge.
  2. Run it flat, then refresh the batteries. If the reset doesn't clear it, let the gauge fully discharge (or remove the batteries for a bit), then install a fresh CR2450 pair and power it on.
  3. Confirm your firmware is up to date in the Combustion app.

The gauge keeps disconnecting, shows “---”, or reads “no data”

If the gauge drops out, shows dashes instead of a temperature, or disappears from the app:

  1. Move things closer. The GGG relays over Bluetooth (MeatNet™). Bring your phone/Display nearer the grill, and keep a clear line of sight — metal, water, brick, glass, and even people block the signal.
  2. Check the batteries. A weak battery often shows up first as dropouts. Swap in fresh CR2450s.
  3. Clean the gold contacts on the display and mount, and reseat the display firmly.
  4. Restart the app, and on iPhone, restart your phone to clear the Bluetooth cache (iOS likes to hold onto stale connections).
  5. Update firmware on all your Combustion devices (one device at a time).

The graph isn't showing in the app

If your gauge's temperature graph isn't appearing in the Combustion app:

  1. Check that your firmware is up to date in the Combustion app (… menu → Update Devices).
  2. Make sure the gauge isn't deselected. If the Giant Grill Gauge is switched off/deselected in the app, it shows up greyed out and its graph won't display. Tap the gauge to re-select it.
  3. Tap the temperature itself — the graph should then appear.

The temperature looks wrong

First, a quick reassurance: the gauge and your food probe are measuring two different things, so they won't always agree and that's normal.

  • The Giant Grill Gauge measures the air temperature near the lid/mount, where your grill's original dome thermometer sat.
  • A Predictive Thermometer's ambient sensor measures the air right at the grate, next to your food.

On a kamado or a tall grill, the lid area can genuinely run hotter or cooler than the grate, so a temperature difference (50-100ºF) between the two is expected — not a fault. Use the gauge for lid/pit temperature the way you'd use your grill's built-in thermometer.

When it's not just normal variation:

  • Readings that jump around wildly (e.g. bouncing hundreds of degrees on a steady fire)
  • A reading that's dramatically off in a known environment (e.g. far from freezing in an ice-water test, or lagging badly above ~220 °F)

“Is this normal?” — installation quirks that aren't defects

A few things look like problems on a brand-new gauge but are completely by design:

  • A gap between the sensor tube and the grill's hole. Grill thermometer holes are often wider (~10 mm) than the GGG's sensor tube (~4 mm), so a little play is normal. It won't stop your grill from holding temperature. If you'd like to snug it up, wrap a bit of aluminum foil around the tube, or add a small washer or felt gasket to reduce airflow through the hole.
  • An air gap under the Heat Shield. The Heat Shield is designed to sit on three small feet with space beneath it — that gap is intentional and keeps the electronics cool during a hot cook. Not a fit problem.
  • The mount only contacting on some points on a curved lid (common on Big Green Egg and other kamados). A little rock on a curved dome is expected; make sure the sensor tube is seated and the locking collar is snug.
  • For some kamado-style grills, the sensor tube needs to be slightly bent to allow more than one foot to contact the lid if the hole is not perpendicular to the lid surface. A few degrees of bending won't harm the sensor tube.
