Which mount do I need for my Combustion Engine?

The Combustion Engine mounts on your grill's lower air intake vent, which is where it controls your fire by pushing air in. Finding your fit is a two-step process:

1. See if one of our existing mounts fits. Print our life-size Mount Fitment Guide and hold your grill's intake opening against the shapes.
2. If none fit, measure your opening. Use our Mounting Plate Fitment Guide and send us the numbers, and we'll match a stocked plate or help make a custom one.

Every Combustion Engine order also includes a Standard Mount, which fits many common grills.

Start with the included Standard Mount

Every Combustion Engine comes with a Standard Mount, a plastic duct with a compressible silicone gasket and a metal mounting bracket. It fits most grills with an adjustable bottom-vent opening, as long as the opening is at least 0.75 inches. That covers a lot of common grills, including the Weber Smokey Mountain, PK Grills, and similar grills with an open bottom vent. (Weber Kettles usually need a small drilled hole. See Step 3.)

Fitting the mount: don't over-tighten it; finger-tight plus a slight turn is enough. Over-tightening can deform the bracket and restrict airflow. The silicone gasket leaves a small gap that closes as you tighten; a little air leakage is fine, and you can fill any larger gaps with foil or high-temp flue tape.

Add a grill-specific adapter if you have a Kamado

If you have a ceramic kamado, you'll want one of the optional mounting adapters (sold separately). The available adapters are:

‼️Big Green Egg and Kamado-style grills mount using their existing vent openings. The adapter snaps into place with a clip system; no drilling required.

Not sure which one matches your grill? Print the life-size Mount Fitment Guide, which shows every mount at actual size:

1. Print it at 100% / "Actual size". Don't scale to fit the page.
2. Check the scale reference at the top (the bar should measure exactly 1 inch) to confirm it printed correctly.
3. Hold your grill's air-intake opening against each shape to see which mount matches. (On the Kamado Small shape, the extra material around the edge is for trimming; the dotted line is the actual opening.)

Big Green Egg tip: For the best airflow, run the Engine with the Egg's vent screen removed. The BGE adapter uses two spring clips for quick on/off, and the sliding ceramic door can sit behind the adapter.

Special case: Weber Kettle

Weber Kettles usually need a small modification: you'll drill a ~3/4" hole in the bottom grate for the Engine's inlet (the Standard Mount fits an opening of at least 0.75"). Older kettles with a rotating vent door often already have holes you can use; newer kettles have a bowl-shaped bottom that needs a custom-drilled hole. Once the hole is made, close the ash-catcher vent and seal any other openings so all the air comes through the Engine. High-temp flue/chimney tape works well for a non-permanent seal.

When cooking hot, keep the coals on the opposite side of the kettle from the mount so they don't sit against the adapter.

"My grill isn't listed. Will the Engine work?"

Very possibly! We're expanding the list of confirmed grills, and the Engine works with many models not listed above. To find your fit:

1. Print the Mount Fitment Guide (above) at 100% and hold the shapes against your intake. This answers most cases on the spot.
2. Still unsure? Measure your opening. Use the Mounting Plate Fitment Guide below to measure the horizontal width (H) and the vertical height under the flanges (V). Any units are fine; for ported grills, note the port diameter.
3. Send us your numbers. Email both measurements plus a photo of the intake area (a ruler or caliper in the shot helps) to [email protected]. We'll tell you which mount to use, match you to a stocked plate, or fabricate a custom plate from your measurements.

A few we're asked about often:

• Kamado Joe (Classic / Big Joe / Jr), Primo (XL / Oval XL), Char-Griller Akorn, Vision Kamado, Monolith: these are kamado-style grills; most work with a Kamado or Big Green Egg adapter, but the right size depends on your model's intake. Send a photo, and we'll confirm.
• Komodo Kamado: not supported yet, and not an easy one to solve for. If you have one, contact us, and we'll set expectations.

FAQ

Does the included Standard Mount fit my grill?

If your grill has an adjustable bottom-vent opening of at least 0.75 inches (like a Weber Smokey Mountain or PK Grill), yes. Weber Kettles usually need a small drilled hole first (see Step 3). Ceramic kamados and Big Green Eggs use a grill-specific adapter instead (see the table above).

How do I know which adapter to pick?

My grill isn't a Weber or a Big Green Egg. Can I still use the Engine?

Very likely. Check the adapter table and life-size guide first; if nothing fits, measure your opening and we'll match a stocked plate or make a custom one.

Do I have to drill or modify my grill?

Most kamados and adjustable-vent grills work as-is. Weber Kettles are the exception: they usually need a ~3/4" hole drilled in the bottom grate (older models with a rotating vent door may already have usable holes). For unusual grills, we'll sort out a plate rather than have you modify the grill.
