Combustion App Feature: Always-On ModeUpdated 23 days ago

What is Always-On Mode?

Always-On Mode is a powerful new feature that allows your Combustion thermometer to stay active indefinitely, even in wet cooking environments like sous vide. This feature solves a common challenge when cooking in moist conditions where water can bridge the charging contacts.

How Does It Work?

In standard operation, Combustion thermometers are designed to enter standby (sleep) mode when they detect a "short" between the charging contacts. This power-saving feature works well in most cooking scenarios but can cause unexpected shutdowns during wet cooking methods.

With Always-On Mode enabled:

  • Your thermometer will remain active regardless of contact bridging
  • The device will not shut down when water creates a connection between the butt and tube
  • You'll maintain continuous temperature monitoring throughout your cook

FYI: “Always On” means it will always stay on, whether in a powered or unpowered charger. The probe will charge in a Booster/dumb charger, but it will also be “on” i.e. collecting temperatures, transmitting, etc.

When to Use Always-On Mode

Always-On Mode is particularly valuable for:

  • Sous vide cooking
  • Boiling or poaching
  • Any wet or immersive cooking method
  • Long cooking sessions where continuous monitoring is critical

How to Enable Always-On Mode

  1. Update your Combustion App to the latest version
  2. Open the Combustion App on your device
  3. Navigate to the thermometer settings (tap the 3-dots across the thermometer name)
  4. Select Power Mode
  5. Toggle the setting from "Standby in Charger" to "Always on"

Battery Considerations

While Always-On Mode provides continuous monitoring, it will consume a lot more battery power than the default mode in a Charger or Booster, and will significantly reduce the standby battery life of your Booster.

Switching Back to Default Mode

To return to the default power-saving mode:

  1. Open the Combustion App
  2. Navigate to thermometer settings
  3. Change the setting from "Always on" back to "Standby in Charger"

Always-On Mode gives you complete control over your cooking experience, ensuring your thermometer stays active exactly when you need it most.
