As an instant read

This is actually the default. Out of its charger with no target temperature set, your thermometer is in instant-read mode. Readings settle in about 4 to 5 seconds.

The one thing to know: it needs to go in deep enough. The minimum insertion depth is 1.97 in / 50 mm, marked on the probe. Any shallower and the upper sensors sit outside the food, which is what most odd instant-read numbers turn out to be. For a quick spot check on something thin, insert at an angle to get the depth.

As a kitchen timer

The Display has a plain timer; no thermometer required. There are countless reasons to time things even when nothing's in the oven. You could be timing your proofing. You could be timing a dessert chilling. You could be timing your nap. We're not here to judge.
