App Alarms and NotificationsUpdated 5 days ago

Your Combustion app can tell you when your food hits its target, when a cook needs attention, and when a tool goes offline. This guide covers how to set those alerts up and what to do when they do not arrive.

If you are missing alarms entirely, the most common cause is a notification permission that was never granted, or one that an operating system update quietly reset.

What the app can alert you about

  • Target temperature reached (your "predict" temperature)
  • SafeCook status, when your food becomes safe
  • High and low temperature alarms
  • Low battery on a thermometer
  • A tool going offline mid-cook

Set up notifications first

Do this once, before a cook you actually care about.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings, then Notifications, then Combustion.
  2. Turn on Allow Notifications.
  3. Turn on Time Sensitive Notifications. Without this, alerts can be held back while your phone is in Focus or Do Not Disturb.
  4. Check that Focus modes are not silencing the app. If you use a Focus while cooking, add Combustion to its allowed list.
  5. Open the Combustion app and confirm the alarms you want are switched on for that cook.

On Android

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, then Combustion, then Notifications.
  2. Turn notifications on.
  3. Go back to the app settings and turn off battery optimisation and data saver for Combustion. These are the most common reasons Android alarms stop arriving.
  4. Under Permissions, allow Nearby Devices and Location if prompted. Android needs these to keep talking to your tools.
  5. Confirm you are signed in to your Combustion account, and that your Booster is on and configured if you are using one.

If alarms only arrive when the app is already open

This is the single most reported notification problem, and the fix depends on your platform.

On Android

Try these in order:

  1. Force-close the app and restart it.
  2. If that does not help, sign out of your Combustion account in the app, then sign back in. This clears a stale connection to our notification service and resolves most cases.
  3. Confirm battery saver and data saver are off for Combustion.
  4. Confirm Nearby Devices permission is granted.

If alarms still only fire with the app open and the screen unlocked, we would like to hear from you. See "Still stuck?" below and include your device model and Android version, as we are actively investigating this on some devices.

On iPhone and iPad

The Android fix above does not apply to iPhone, because the two platforms use different notification systems. On iOS:

  1. Check that you are on the latest app version and the latest public iOS release.
  2. Confirm Time Sensitive Notifications is on, as above.
  3. Work out which thing is actually failing. A banner or sound alarm and the Live Activity on your lock screen are two separate features, and they can fail independently. Note which one you are missing before you get in touch, as it points us straight at the cause.

If you are running an iOS beta, be aware that beta releases have previously changed how much memory a Live Activity is allowed, which can stop it updating. That is an Apple-side behaviour rather than something in the app. Keep the app in the foreground for critical cooks while you are on a beta.

Live Activity and Dynamic Island on iPhone

The app can show your cook on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island, so you can check progress without opening it.

  • Tap the Live Activity or Dynamic Island to jump straight to the right device in the app.
  • If the Live Activity crashes or will not stay up on an older iPhone, switch that device from Advanced view to Standard view. Advanced view graphs all eight sensors and is heavier to keep running in the background.
  • A Live Activity is not a replacement for alarms. If your alerts are not arriving, work through the section above rather than relying on the lock screen.

Silencing an alarm that will not stop

A long-running alarm, for example, a high or low temperature alarm during an overnight cook, will keep sounding until the condition clears.

  • Clear or adjust the alarm in the app for the device that is sounding.
  • Cancelling the target temperature and setting it again will also reset an alarm that has already fired.
  • If a Display or Giant Grill Gauge is doing the beeping, silence it on that tool as well. Tools alarm independently of the app.

Alarms on the Display and Giant Grill Gauge

Your Display and Giant Grill Gauge can alarm on their own, without the app running. That is deliberate, so a cook is still covered if your phone wanders off.

It also means silencing an alarm in the app does not always silence the tool. If something is still beeping after you cleared it on your phone, check the tool itself.

Still stuck?

If your alerts still are not arriving after working through the steps for your platform, email [email protected] and include:

  • Your phone or tablet model and operating system version
  • Your app version
  • Which alert you are missing (target temperature, SafeCook, high or low alarm, low battery, offline)
  • Whether the Live Activity or Dynamic Island is working, if you are on iPhone
  • Whether alarms arrive when the app is open

Notification problems are very hard to diagnose without those details, and very quick to diagnose with them.
